Main Characters in the Film 

 
Juan Diego with Virgin Mary


Juan Diego is a simple, humble peasant Indian

who sees the Virgin Mary at the age of 57.  He converts to Catholicism at age 50.  He works in the fields, makes furniture and is employed as a mat maker.

Bishop Zumarraga


Bishop Zumarraga is a pious Franciscan priest who travels from Spain to Mexico City.  His duties as bishop in the new world is to protect the Indians, to counsel the Spainiards and encourage his priests.

Bishop's Servants - There are 7 Servants who work for the Bishop in his office - both Spaniards and Indians.

Bishop's Associate - helped Bishop Zumarraga by keeping him informed of things going on in the colony.  This is a close personal Spaniard friend

Don Nuno de Guzman


Don Nuno de Guzman was governor of Panuco and President of the first Audience.  

Guzman's Basque friend -  Guzman's Basque friend translate the Basque language

Guzman's Shaman translator - this translator could speak the native language.

Juan Bernadino

Juan Bernadino is Juan Dieog's uncle.  He is a pios older man aged 71 at the time of the apparitions. He is very devout, one of the few Indian converts. 

Metzli - she is a noble Aztec woman whom Juan Diego knew from the time he is very young.  She is very beautiful, has long dark hair, medium build, she is around 48 at the time of the apparitions.  

Maria Lucia -  She is a friend and then the wife of Juan Diego.  She is a pious woman age 35 at the time she marries Juan Diego.  She is an Aztec Indian and a peasant.  She is very joyful, happy, loving life.  She has long dark hair with a bit of a wave, she is very beautiful.  She is one of the few converts to Catholism.

Antso -  He is the newphew of Bishop Zumarraga who travles from Spain to Mexico City, he works for the bishop.

Fr. Peter de Gante (or Pedro de Gante)

Arrives in New Spain 1524, baptizes Juan Diego and Maria Lucia.  He is a devout, pious Franciscan priest.  He is very prayerful, more reseved, contemplative.

Fr. Molinia 

Gives religious instruction and speaks of Purity, arrives 1524 He is a devout, pious Franciscan priest.  He is outspoken.

Fr. Bartolome de las Casas

He arrives in Mexico City in 1524, he is a devout, pious, Franciscan priest.

He was a Spaniard, owned land, thought he was noble but was misguided.

Hernan Cortez

Cortez is a zealous conquitador who brings the Catholic faith to the Indians by means of force. He is ruthless in his conquest.  As a conquistador, he seeks to bring Christianity but he also works to aquire personal wealth.  He was married.

Dona Marina

Dona Marina was a very beautiful Aztec woman who became the translator to Cortez.  She was a Catholic convert. She was very intellingent, knew several languages and was good at negotiating.

Montezuma

 

Montezuma was a strong, proud man, an Aztec Indian.  He ruled with an iron fist.  He believed in prophesies and omens.  He ruled millions of Aztec Indians.

Geronimo Aquiliar

He was a Franciscan priest who translated for Cortez.  He was devout, pious and intellingent.  He learned the Mayan language.

King Charles V

King Charles V was a noble ruler, king of Spain.  He had faith in God, He wanted to protect the Indians. He had difficulty in controlling the Spanairds of Mexico City and Panuco.  

Queen Isabella

Queen Isabella was a strong woman of great faith.  She was firm in her convictions.  She was a woman who was comfortable in her postion of ruler.  She was very intelligent, practical and knew how to govern.  

King Ferdinand II of Aragon

King Ferdinand was practical, authoritative and devout ruler.  He happily married to Queen Isabella and he sought her counsel.  He did not trust others very easily.  He had seen much war and suffering.  He ran the monarch with a tight fist but he also knew to take risks.

Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus was persuasive, charming, single-minded and had much perserverence.  He was a devout Catholic.

Gil Cordero

Gil was a herdsman who Our Lady appears to when he was in his late 30's.  He was humble, pious, simple and obedient.  He was poor.
